Waste Hierarchy

We believe that responsible waste management starts with understanding the waste hierarchy. This simple framework shows the best way to deal with rubbish, putting prevention and reuse at the top and landfill at the very bottom.

The Waste Hierarchy Eco Waste and Recycling

What is the waste hierarchy?

The waste hierarchy is a guide to sustainable waste disposal. It ranks the order of preference for dealing with waste, starting with reducing it in the first place, then reusing, recycling and recovering materials. The aim is always to move materials up the ladder, saving resources and cutting the impact on the environment.
The hierarchy is usually shown as a pyramid with five key levels:

The Stages of the Waste Hierarchy

1. Prevention

The best way to manage waste is not to create it in the first place. Prevention means choosing reusable products, buying only what’s needed, and finding ways to extend the life of items.

2. Reuse

When waste can’t be avoided, the next step is reuse. This could mean repairing broken items, donating unwanted goods, or finding a new use for materials rather than throwing them away.

3. Recycling

Recycling takes materials like paper, cardboard, plastics, metals and wood and processes them so they can be used again. Recycling keeps valuable resources in circulation and reduces the demand for raw materials.

4. Recovery

If reuse or recycling isn’t possible, some waste can still be used to generate energy through recovery processes. This helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels and makes the most of materials before final disposal.

5. Disposal

Disposal is the final option, and should only be used when no other method is possible.

Why is it important to move waste up the hierarchy?

Each step up the waste hierarchy has a greater benefit for the environment. Preventing and reusing waste saves the most resources, while recycling and recovery still reduce impacts compared to landfill. By keeping materials in use for longer, we conserve natural resources, cut carbon emissions and keep our communities cleaner. For households and businesses alike, it offers a clear way to make more environmentally responsible choices.

Our Commitment to the Waste Hierarchy

At Eco Waste & Recycling, we are committed to a zero-to-landfill policy. All waste collected through our skip hire, tipping and man and van services is taken to our licensed facilities, where it is carefully sorted in a safe, controlled environment. Wherever possible, materials are reused or recycled, ensuring they are moved higher up the waste hierarchy instead of being discarded.

How Eco supports the waste hierarchy

Here’s how we put the waste hierarchy into action:

  • Prevention: We educate our customers on ways to reduce waste at the source.
  • Reuse: Materials suitable for reuse are separated and kept in circulation wherever possible.
  • Recycling: The majority of waste is recycled, from construction rubble to everyday household rubbish.
  • Recovery: Non-recyclable waste is processed to generate energy.
  • Disposal: Eco Waste & Recycling is committed to zero-to-landfill practices. By following the waste hierarchy, we help to divert waste from landfill.
